Scooter Clubs Bring Riders Together

Scooter owners are taking fun to the next level. Seeking out other riders on web sites like ScooterFanatics, riders are banding together at meet-ups to talk scooters, swap stories, and ride together. Scooter sales have jumped 200% since 2004 and continue to rise, according to Dow Jones' Market Watch, spurring the nationwide interest in scooter clubs.

Most large cities now sport at least one scooter club. Membership is not limited to 20- and 30-something urbanites. Many suburban boomers and seniors are joining riding groups. Clubs sponsor group rides, fund-raisers, and drive-ins to local restaurants to swap stories and spare parts. Washington riders recently hosted their second annual Scootergate rally with record attendance.

Some clubs are dedicated to a particular scooter model. Moped Army, a national group that promotes finding and restoring 1970s and 1980s mopeds and updating them to current environmental code, was one of the initiaters of the scooter craze. Moped Army was created in the late 1990s to promote environmentally friendly and fun commuting, said Annie Tsui, co-founder of Mission 23, the New York branch.
