Across the country scooter sales have been rising as gas prices soar. "The gas prices helped me justify it," said Linda Rose, a Carmichael, CA grandmother of her green Vespa GT 200. "I just filled my tank for $5 and I could tootle around for another 100 miles. I do everything on it." Rose hops on her scooter to go to work, the video store, the grocery, and recently cruised the Auburn hills on a road trip with 40 other scooter buffs.

Americans' wallets are significantly lighter this week as gas prices edged over the $3 mark in the midwest and reached appalling prices well over $3 on both coasts. As gas prices soar, more people are turning to fuel-efficient scooters to get around town. Major Smith of Greenville, North Carolina estimates he's already saved $150 in gas since buying his scooter earlier this summer.

"The way gas prices are getting, as far as around town, short distances, you can't beat it," said Smith in an article posted by Eyewitness News 9. "It sure saves on the wallet."

Even the largest scooters (150 to 250 cc) average 60 miles per gallon for in-town driving. With smaller 50 cc models, you can get a whopping 90 to 100 mpg. In comparison, a 4-cylinder car averages 28 mpg in town; a V-6, 22 mpg; a truck or SUV, only 14 mpg.

The promise of high gas mileage is bringing car owners into scooter showrooms. Scooter sales surged 65% in the third quarter of 2005 as gas prices started to skyrocket, and increased by 18% overall, according to an article by Rick Popely that appeared in the Baltimore Sun online. Working a second job to keep pace with the high cost of gas, Terrence Hunter of South Bend, IN bought his first moped a few months ago. Getting 85 to 100 miles per gallon, the scooter costs him only $10 to $15 a week at the gas pump, quite a savings compared to the $50 he was spending to fill his truck.
